Part Time Learning Guide Position : 2025/26 

Location: 48 Front St, Berea OH 44017

Terms: September 2 - December 11, 2025 and Jan 6 - May 22, 2026

Time Commitment: Tuesdays and Thursdays 9:00am-3:00pm, and occasional after school/Friday events (option to fill in as a substitute on Wednesdays as needed)

Pay Rate: $15/hour to start

At Bloom Learning Community, our mantra is “space to grow, freedom to flourish, body + heart + mind.” We are a learner-centered holistic microschool for children ages 6-12, founded in 2019. 

Bloom staff are “Learning Guides” who assist kids to stay with their chosen activity or take a break when needed; to help problem solve, troubleshoot, and brainstorm; to help mediate conflict and work with emotions; to challenge when necessary and nurture when needed. 

We walk to Coe Lake, Mucklo Playground, or the Metroparks daily in all types of weather, as well as frequently visit the library or other locations within walking distance in the downtown area.

Expectations of Learning Guides: 

  • Attend all shifts (and/or communicate absences in a timely manner) 

  • Assist with all staff duties listed below 

  • Respectfully connect, enthusiastically engage with, and be available to students 

  • Be inquisitive, energetic, positive, willing to learn, and committed to seeking help as needed 

  • Participate with regular check-ins: receive and give feedback regarding your experience

  • Careful observation of learners and thoughtful assistance to challenge their abilities to advance to personal next levels

  • No cell phone use (except in emergencies or during any scheduled breaks)

  • Compassionate and conscious language when assisting with problem solving and conflict resolution among learners

Specific Duties Each Day:

  • Empower learners to problem solve and handle interpersonal issues to the extent developmentally appropriate

  • Encourage self-responsibility and discuss natural consequences of choices

  • Provide calm support and emotional co-regulation with children during activities

  • Support children in making self-directed choices pertaining to learning activity options, and gently redirect as necessary

  • Support Directors’ specific weekly plans and activities

  • Support children in cleaning up before changing activities

  • Keep tabs on the location of all children at the park, playground, library, etc. with frequent head counts

  • Allow for as much freedom, creativity, and self-directed learning as possible, within the parameters of safety and group harmony

  • Work individually or in small groups with children

  • Follow the Positive Discipline Policy (as outlined in the Family Handbook)

  • Compassionately communicate with children, families, and Bloom Directors to provide helpful feedback that will improve the experience for all

  • Occasional light office/administrative support

Required Qualifications:

To be considered for this position, the candidate must be able to demonstrate: 

  • Enthusiasm about self-directed and alternative models of education 

  • Commitment to upholding equal rights between youth and adults

  • Creativity, open-mindedness, and flexible thinking

  • Patience, confidence, and a holistic mindset

  • Willingness to learn new information and develop skills and abilities 

  • Be an interested, engaged, and passionate person

  • Behavior management skills 

  • Must be extremely reliable, punctual, and safety-conscious 

  • Successfully pass a required background check 

Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Understanding of child development, individual learning styles, child-centered learning, and the demonstrated experience and ability to apply those principles

  • Framework around youth empowerment, non-coercive education, and adultism

  • Experience with Project Based Learning

  • Experience teaching/tutoring language arts, math, science, or an area in the arts in a classroom, small group, or one-on-one setting

  • Experience with meditation, mindfulness, and/or Nonviolent Communication
